Why Does my stomach hurt?

Pain is usually a sign that all is not well and should not be ignored

Pain in your belly can be caused by either an infection in your belly or some part of your bowel is obstructed, or even a growth in your abdomen,

 

There are many organs in the abdomen and pin pointing the source of the pain can really help in telling where the pain is coming from

 

We would try to make things a little easier for you, by giving you some clues as to the location and possible causes

 

Pain that you feel throughout the abdomen may be due to:

  • Crohn’s disease
  • Injury to the abdomen
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • appendicitis( inflammation of the appendicitis) but this is more pronounced in the lower right aspect of the stomach which we would get to
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis:a condition that occurs when the body starts breaking down fat at a rate that is much too fast. This fat is broken down into ketones by the liver that makes the blood acidic, happens mostly to people living with diabetes, A life threatening condition

 

 

 

Pain that you feel in the lower abdomen mainly (below your umbilicus) may be due to:

  • Appendicitis
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Obstruction of your intestines, either partial or complete
  • Ectopic pregnancy(a pregnancy that occurs outside your uterus)

But in women, this list is more because of the presence of their reproductive organs in the lower part of the abdomen

  • severe menstrual pain (called dysmenorrhea) This is the commonest, described as cramping
  • Cysts in the ovaries
  • An early miscarriage
  • Fibroids (growths in your womb)
  • ectopic pregnancy
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease: an infection of the reproductive organs commonly caused by STDs

 

Upper abdominal pain may be caused by:

  • Gallstones( hardened material in your gallbladder) your gallbladder is mainly responsible for digesting fats
  • Hepatitis ( an inflammation of your liver)
  • Stomach ulcers, This type of pain is related to your meals, can be worse before or after a meal

 

 

 

Common causes of Pain in the Center of the abdomen include:

  • appendicitis
  • gastroenteritis
  • injury

 

Common causes of pain in the left lower side of your abdomen:

  • Crohn’s disease
  • kidney infection
  • ovarian cysts
  • appendicitis

 

Pain in the upper left side of your abdomen can be caused by:

  • (hardened stool that can’t be eliminated)
  • Any form of injury
  • kidney infection
  • heart attack
  • cancer
  • Problems with the spleen

 

Common Causes of pain in the lower right portion may include

  • Appendicitis ( very common)
  • cancer
  • flu

Upper right abdominal pain may be caused by:

  • hepatitis
  • any form of injury
  • pneumonia

 

 

You will need to see a doctor if:

  • your abdominal pain lasts longer than 24 hours and/or is increasing in intensity
  • you have not used the toilet for a couple of days
  • you are vomiting
  • you feel pain when you urinate
  • you have a fever
  • you don’t have an appetite
  • you are losing weight in an abnormal manner

  1. Dear aprokodoctor, I tested positive for h.pylori and after series of medications like clarithromacin, Omeprazole and amoxicillin did a follow up test. It came out h.pylori negative. But I still feel pain on my mid and upper abdomen on the right side and sometimes on the left with chest pain sometimes on my left side, and mid chest. What would have been the cause.
