The different ways to prevent pregnancy

Male Condoms:
The male type, just a sheath of rubber used to cover the penis
It blocks sperms from reaching the vagina
Very cheap
How effective? If used correctly can prevent pregnancy about 95% of the time. BUt in real life, they work about 85%
Side effects: some people have a latex allergy

Female condoms
Cheap also, but availability is not as common as the male condom, enters into the vagina and blocks sperms from reaching the womb.
Side effects: allergies too
How effective? About 79%

Cervical cap:
A cap-like device that covers the cervix, can also be filled with spermicides(substances that kill sperms.
The issue is that it had to be in for some hours after sex and some people can develop very serious reactions to the spermicide.
How effective? 80%

Implants:
As big as a match stick, it is implanted under the skin, but it’s a hormone.
It affects the cervical mucus and affects ovulation. Lasts for 5 years
How effective? 99%
Side effects: weight gain, breasts tenderness, pimple, your periods may be irregular

 

Copper IUD:
This is placed inside the womb,
It prevents the fertilized egg from joining the womb.
Can be used for 10 years
How effective? 99%

Side effects: cramps, spotting, sometimes can go missing in the womb,

Hormonal IUD:
Same as above, the only difference is this one has a hormone that also blocks ovulation and makes cervical mucus thick
How effective? 99+%
Side effects; same as above plus No periods!!! Or irregular periods

 

Contraceptive pills. (combined):
You take this one every day, and it also helps to block the cervix by increasing the mucus production and ovulation
It can also reduce the menstrual symptoms
How effective: 91%
Side effects: some people can forget and you can carry belle.
It can reduce your risk of ovarian cancer

 

Hormonal injection;
Used every 3 months, works like the implant,
How effective: 98%
Side effects: no periods, nausea, breast tenderness etc

Emergency Pills
WORKS for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.
How effective: it drops as time passes, and how but can be as high as 98%
Not to be taken often, if you need to use it more often, use a more permanent method

Bilateral tubal ligation and hysterectomy.

They remove the womb or tie the tubes that bring the egg to the womb
How effective: 99+%
Side effects: ectopic pregnancy for some people. Mood changes, depression, etc

Vasectomy:
The tubes that bring sperm into the penis is cut!
Meaning no sperms…
How effective: 99+%
Side effects; you can only start having unprotected sex after three months after they have verified that there is no sperm in your ejaculate

Abstinence:

How effective: 100%

NO sex, no pregnancy

  1. Thanks for this article. My comment is more like a question. We, my wife just started using this combination pills (oral Contraceptive). I’d like to know if we miss a dose for a few hours (from.my count 7hrs from her normal scheduled time of 7:20pm) and later took it immediately we remembered, will it still be effective? Note: we had sex in between. Do we still require an emergency contraceptive or we should just expect pregnancy since it happened few hours to her ovulation. Thanks.
