According to a new study, people who drink very hot tea may be increasing their chances of getting esophageal cancer
What they found out was that people who drank tea that was hotter than 60 degrees Celsius and consumed more than 700 ml of tea per day had a 90% higher risk of getting oesophageal cancer, the risk was smaller in people who drank tea at lower temperatures and even consumed less volume
What does this mean?
Esophageal cancer is the eighth most common cancer in the world and kills approximately 400,000 people every year, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
It is usually caused by repeated injury to the esophagus due to smoke, alcohol, acid reflux and (recently found out) hot liquids.
The esophagus is a long tube that allow food and liquids reach the stomach.
The researchers said that they would need more study as to why that exact temperature was associated with the risk of cancer, it is also found out that it was the heat that is the culprit, rather than the type of tea, so it could be plain water but as long as it was hot, the risk remained
In places like Russia, Iran, Turkey and South America, it is common to drink tea that hot or even hotter.
It is the repeated damage that these hot drinks cause that most likely lead to cancer, even sunburn leads to cancer, smoking leads to cancer, because of the repeated damage over time,
It is best to allow your drink cool down before drinking, as it has been established that hot beverages can increase the chances of you getting esophageal cancer
